Dec 04, 2015 (newstodate): Turkmenistan's Ashgabat Airport has commissioned a new runway and other airport infrastructure as part of the efforts to build the airport into a modern international aviation hub in Central Asia.
The refurbished runway is 3,000m long, capable of accepting aircraft operations under even adverse weather conditions.
The entire runway and taxiway system is equipped with air navigation, radio, lighting and alarm system meeting all ICAO requirements, and a new ATC tower equipped with ATM systems provided by Thales.
Also comprised by the project are the construction of a new cargo terminal offering the capacity of handling up to 200,000 tonnes of cargo annually, as well as new passenger and VIP-terminals, a technical center with a maintenance and repair hangar, a medical center, a center for pilots and flight attendants, and other facilities.
The projects at Ashgabat are part of the country's National Programme for the Development of Civil Aviation of Turkmenistan for 2012-2030.
