Dec 02, 2015 (newstodate): Following a comprehensive audit this autumn, the US FAA has downgrades Thailand's rating from Cat I to Category II due to lack of compliance with ICAO safety requirements.
After this, Thai carriers may continue serving existing routes into the USA but will be barred from setting up new routes with aircraft on Thai registry.
On June 18, 2015, ICAO reported of inconsistency with international standards of Thailand's civil aviation management, finding the dual role played by Thailand's CAA being both regulator and operator of provincial airports unacceptable.
FAA granted Thailand 90 days to remedy the problem, but the country failed in meeting the requirements.
As one immediate effect from the downgrading of Thailand, the aviation authorities of China, Japan and South Korea have stopped all negotiations with Thailand over new scheduled and charter flights.
Other companies with plans for setting up new airline ventures in Thailand will probably also keep their initiatives on ice till later.
