Dec 16, 2015 (newstodate): The cargo handling company North Hub Cargo at Riga Airport has seen its volumes drastically down in 2015.
-We will land around 9,500 tonnes of cargo and mail handled in 2015, which is a sustained decline by 20-25 percent this year, says Olegs Korshe, North Hub Cargo general manager.
-The explanation is obvious: we have depended heavily on cargo transit traffic destined for Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, and sanctions on Russia have hit hard while the purchasing power of all three markets has also gone down significantly during the recent period.
-So all in all, we can just hope for better times to return as well as more traffic to call at Riga Airport, says Mr Korshe.
According to statistics from Riga Airport, a total of 16,927 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled during the first 11 months of this year - a far cry from volumes in 2013 when a total of 53,540 tonnes was handled, primarily due to the ISAF operations at the airport that were, however, not handled by North Hub Cargo.
