Dec 14, 2015 (newstodate): Sweden's Gothenburg Airport was formerly a large freighter hub, but volumes have been declining, year by year. Now new cargo and logistics facilities are under construction.
The airport has embarked on its biggest construction project since the mid-1970s, when the airport was first built.
The next phase of Airport City, Logistics Park 1, has now been launched, adding some 250,000 sq m of land for the development of new facilities in warehousing, logistics and operations, including offices.
The area now under construction is located between the motorway and DB Schenker's existing logistics facility, aiming at gaining the airport a position as a logistics hub for western Sweden.
The project involves buildings for logistics operations with about 100,000 sq m of floor space, to be constructed in Logistics Park 1.
The first building in the new area is expected to be commissioned by 2017.
In October 2015, Gothenburg Airport handled a total of 5,230 tonnes of cargo, down 3.7 percent, y-o-y.
