Dec 22, 2015 (newstodate): The volume of passengers through the three major international airports serving the Moscow region was up by 1.3 percent y-o-y, during the first 11 months of this year.
A total of 72,651,000 passengers was thus handled at Moscow Sheremetyevo, Moscow Domodedovo and Moscow Vnukovo - but only due to an increase in domestic traffic by 15.1 percent to 36,883,000.
Pulling into the opposite direction, the number of passengers on international flights was down 9.9 percent to 35,768,000.
Due to the prevailing economic and political situation in and around Russia, the decreasing demand for international air travel to and from Russia has forced many western airlines to reduce, or even abrogate flights, while the pull-out by western airlines from the Russian market forces Russians with foreign destinations to travel via the three airports in Russia, which reflects in the over-all statistics.
