Dec 22, 2015 (newstodate): 82 Danish specially selected bull calves can now look forward to a pleasant future in India after a 12 hours long flight on December 15, 2015, from Billund Airport to Calcutta and Chennai.
Selling the lot to an Indian company was the Danish exporter of breeding cattle Bovi-Denmark, with the Danish forwarding company A2Z Shipping in charge of the logistics, subcontracting the entire airport-to-airport operation to Danish brokering company Blackbird Air Charter.
-While this operation was a first for Blackbird, it builds on our individual and rich experience with live animal operations from years with other forwarding companies, says Jesper Dalgaard Petersen, Blackbird Air Charter COO.
-We selected Qatar Airways to provide the direct non-stop flight operation with an Airbus A330-200F from Billund to Calcutta, continuing to Chennai for delivering parts of the shipment to the Indian customer, and the entire operation went fully as planned despite its demanding complexity.
-Part of our responsibilities was the construction of tailored crates allowing for transportation and handling of the animals during loading, flight and offloading, as well as the on-board infrastructure including temperature control, humidity, provision of water and constant supervision by two staff to monitor and secure the safety and health conditions of the animals along the entire airport-to-airport chain of operation.
-Given the fact that the weight of the calves varied from 100 to 425 kg, this is no mean task..
-An operation like this would normally require an en-route stop at Doha to change flight designation, but thanks to the unique reputation and excellent relations of Qatar Airways with the Indian authorities, this flight operation was allowed to be performed as a non-stop direct flight contributing to the quality of the entire operation, says Mr Petersen.
