Dec 08, 2015 (newstodate): The Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific is to take delivery of its first Airbus A350 aircraft by February 2016, opening up for new routes, including to destinations in Europe.
According to CAPA, Copenhagen Airport may become one new CX-destination served with the Airbus A350, alongside other destinations including London Gatwick and Madrid.
-Europe is a focus as Cathay has been under-exposed on the continent compared to peers including Air China and Singapore Airlines, CAPA says.
Cathay Pacific has placed orders for delivery of 22 Airbus A350-900 and 26 of the larger version A350-1000.
Under Cathay's strategy, the A350-900 aircraft will primarily be targeted at helping the airline open new points in Europe, and to add a second or third frequency to existing destinations.
Cathay Pacific last served Scandinavia with flights from Hong Kong to Stockholm, Sweden, from February 14, 1995, first routed via Frankfurt and later operated as direct non-stop flights from winter 1995, but pulled out again after a few years.
Starting from September 10, 2015, SAS has returned flights from Stockholm to Hong Kong with five weekly rotations using Airbus A340/330 on the route.
