Dec 01, 2015 (newstodate): Finnair has sold its cargo terminal at Helsinki Airport to Finavia as part of joint efforts to prepare for the expected significant increase in traffic at the airport by 2020 requiring a new infrastructure.
Cargo handling will remain the terminal until spring 2017 when Finnair Cargo's new terminal, now under construction, will be commissioned.
The new 31,000 sq m terminal will be divided into three zones: 25,000 sq m will be dedicated to general cargo handling, and two spaces for temperature-controlled zones, roughly 3,000 sq m each.
The new facility will be ready for handling of the carrier's cargo volumes on coming the fleet of new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.
Talk of a new cargo terminal for Finnair was on the agenda for almost 10 years, with the first project envisaged for commissioning already in 2008.
But the global financial crisis hit hard at visions and the project was stalled until finally confirmed by the Finnair Board in March 2015.
