Dec 02, 2015 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport is heading for a solid all-year growth in 2015, with passenger volumes up by 10.7 percent in January-November 2015, to a total of 259,996 passengers.
November alone proved another solid success with a growth in pax volumes by 17.1 percent, y-o-y, to 17,496.
Behind the solid trend are factors including growth of the Faroese economy and lower taxes on wages leading to a stronger demand in the domestic market, as well as the influx of more tourists and more business travel, according to the airport.
Another major contributor is the airport's state-of-the-art infrastructure in airnav capabilities and the extended runway allowing for reliable air services by larger aircraft including the Airbus A319 operated by the country's home carrier Atlantic Airways that still remains the only airline offering scheduled year-round services to and from the Faroe Islands.
Late in 2016 the carrier will take delivery of a larger aircraft, the Airbus A320 dedicated to the trunk route to Denmark, while a decision on the choice of aircraft type for the expansion of regional routes is still pending on the desk of the carrier's new CEO since September 2, 1015, Johanna a Bergi.
