Nov 10, 2015 (newstodate): Plans are underway for new air services between China and Sochi, in Russia.
According to Basel Aero, operator of Sochi International Airport, a preliminary agreement has been reached with the city of Chengdu, in China, and Sochi to launch a direct air service connecting the two destinations in 2016.
The planned flights with at least two weekly rotations will be provided by both Russian and Chinese carriers that are yet to be named.
Sochi International Airport is actively working to extend the Open Skies regime that was initially scheduled to expire in summer 2016.
In August 2015, Basel Aero thus signed a MoU with the airport management department of Chinese Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region to establish direct service between Urumqi and Sochi.
In October 2014, Sochi was granted Open Skies status allowing any foreign carrier to pick up and drop off passengers and cargo with no restrictions on aircraft type, frequency, and regardless of interstate agreements.
In addition, foreign airlines are also allowed to operate transit flights between countries with a stopover in Sochi where they will also be able to take new passengers on board.
Among the carriers that have joined Sochis Open Skies are Turkish Airlines that added more Sochi-Istanbul flights in November 2014.
Iranians Mahan Air has been performing regular Tehran-Sochi flights since July, and a number of CIS and European carriers are expected to launch transit flights with a stopover in Sochi.
