Nov 25, 2015 (newstodate): Backed by state and regional funds, Sweden may see a new international airport opening in winter 2017/18.
Named Scandinavian Mountains Airport, the new facility will build on an existing small civilian airport in northern Sweden's mountainous region adjoining a similar region in Norway, and plans include the construction of a 2,500 m runway facilitating operations by charter aircraft up to the size of Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
Also in the plans is the construction of a 3,000 sq m building housing a passenger terminal and offices.
Scandinavian Mountains Airport has just named Brett Weihart as its new managing director.
Formerly serving with Swedavia in various positions, Mr Weihart currently also serves as Regional Airport Partners since June 2012.
