Nov 23, 2015 (newstodate): In what seems to outsiders as a coded message, "airBaltic has not yet made a decision on purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi 100 aircraft".
The citation is carried by the Latvian news media the Baltic Course, and the words were spoken by the country's transport minister after a government meeting on November 19, 2015.
A debate is seemingly raging over the consequences from the investor agreement with German national Ralf Dieter Montag-Girmes that may reportedly have some connections to Russian industry circles including Sukhoi that would be keen to sign up airBaltic for its Superjet.
What is known and confirmed is that airBaltic is to take delivery of a total of 13 CS300 aircraft, and holds options for a further seven aircraft, with the first delivery by September 2016.
No clues are currently available on the relationship between the CS300 orders and a potential interest in the Superjet 100 aircraft.
airBaltic expects to have 10 CS300 aircraft flying before the end of 2016, enabling the carrier to phase out its current fleet of eight Boeing 737-300 and five Boeing 737-500 aircraft from 2017.
After that, airBaltic will be operating an all-Bombardier fleet also comprising 12 Q400 aircraft.
