Nov 03, 2015 (newstodate): Helsinki Airport is amid an extensive construction program to bolster its position as a leading long-haul airport in Northern Europe.
-Our target is achieving 20 mio passengers in 2020, up from some 16.3 mio in 2015, first of all by growing our volume of Asian traffic that benefits from our geographic localization providing the shortest route between Asia and Europe, says Timo Jarvela, Finavia Head of Accounts and Route Development.
-With 65 percent of the traffic at Helsinki Airport, Finnair is our single largest airline, and with the future fleet of 19 Airbus A350 aircraft we will see this airline adding more flights and destinations to its offering. Already in 2016 we will have 17 Asian destinations on the route map of Helsinki Airport.
-Due to our geography, airlines can operate a full rotation between Helsinki and Japan within 24 hours translating into a high rate of aircraft utilization and an attractive operational cost-efficiency, making Helsinki an ideal transfer points in traffic between Europe and Asia.
-Great focus is, therefore, attached to securing a positive customer experience, attractive service offerings, and smooth transfer through Helsinki where we are capable of transfer times down to 40 minutes on non-Schengen routes, and 30 minutes on Schengen routes.
-Today, 30 percent, or some five mio, of our passengers are transferring at the airport, while 11 mio are point-to-point passengers.
-Measured in Europe-Asia flights Helsinki is ranked #5 after only London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam - and well over #11 Copenhagen and #19, Oslo, says Mr Jarvela.
