Nov 03, 2015 (newstodate): Russia's Kaliningrad Khrabrovo Airport is to go through an extensive upgrading of its infrastructure.
In the project, now launched, the airport's runway will be extended from the current 2,500 to 3,350m, new runway lighting systems will be implemented as well as new MET equipment and radar systems.
The apron area will also be expanded, and a new power supply system is to be installed.
The runway will be certified to CAT II levels allowing for operation by aircraft up to the size of Boeing 767 and IL-96.
A new passenger terminal is under construction, designed to handling of up to 3.5 mio passengers annually, and the first phase is slated for completion by summer 2016.
Driving the process are expectations for a boost in traffic in connection with Russia's hosting of FIFA 2018.
