Nov 04, 2015 (newstodate): The upgrading of Armenia's Stepanavan Airport, in the country's Lori province, is to be completed in 2016.
Plans are to use the airport, now without traffic, as a base for emergency and relief operations, and Armenia has reached an agreement with Russia over delivery of "a number" of large helicopters to be based there.
According to the country's Minister of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations, Armenia is also in talks with western partners over delivery of an unspecified number of French helicopters.
Stepanavan Airport with a 1,998m runway operates an exchange agreement with Doncaster Sheffield Airport whereby staff from both sides undertake short periods of training at the corresponding airport.
