Oct 12, 2015 (newstodate): The sun never sets on the highly politicized discussions over Greenland's future airports infrastructure.
So far, the year-long discussion has revealed that the country will either need a long-overdue reconstruction of the Atlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq or a new airport to replace the existing Atlantic airports - with a DKK 2 bio price tag in either case, which exceeds the country's own financial means.
The latest input to the discussion is now a proposal to shorten the existing 2,800m runway at Kangerlussuaq to just 1,800, rather than refurbishing it entirely.
That would, however, require the country's airline, Air Greenland, to replace its existing single Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the core route between Greenland and Denmark.
The Airbus A330-200 requires a 2,250m runway for a take-off with maximum weight, while it can land on 1,750m when good weather conditions prevail.
