Oct 29, 2015 (newstodate): Lithuania and Kazakhstan are agreed that there is a need for establishing direct air links between the two countries.
At a meeting between Lithuania's Minister of Transport and Communications and the Mayor of Astana, the parties agreed that stronger economic relations between Vilnius and Astana now call for establishing an air service to support trade and tourism.
In 2014, the Kazakh-Lithuanian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation discussed the possibility of Kazakh airlines conducting direct flights to Vilnius, and this issue has been on the agenda on several later occasions.
According to the Mayor of Astana, direct flights between Astana and Vilnius could be started in 2017 at the latest, when world exhibition EXPO 2017 will be held in Astana.
It is expected that the start of the exhibition will create around 40 new air routes into the capital of Kazakhstan.
In order to provide flights to Vilnius, the air carriers of Kazakhstan will have to meet the European Commission's directive on Air Safety Assessment, which is expected to be announced in spring 2016.
As of now, only specific aircraft from Air Astana are permitted to operate into EU airports.
About 70 other Kazakh airlines are still on EU's list of carriers banned from operating into community airports.
