Oct 27, 2015 (newstodate): Norway's Torp Sandefjord Airport proved a limited success for the handling company Aviator.
Aviator established airport handling services at Torp in spring 2012, breaking the decades-long monopoly by the Norwegian handling company Wideroe Ground Handling.
With effect from November 1, 2015, Aviator is backing out from Torp Sandefjord Airport after having lost several of its customers including Wizz Air that awarded a multiple station contract to Aviator in Norway comprising seven stations excluding, however, Torp Airport that was lost from its portfolio.
Wideroe Ground Handling is thus again alone in providing handling services at Torp Sandefjord Airport.
-It is, of course, always preferable to have competition in the market, but the volume must still be big enough to sustain profitable operations for all parties, says Tine Kleive-Mathisen, Torp Sandefjord Airport marketing manager.
-Airlines operating at the airport include Wideroe, KLM and Norwegian, Ryanair and Wizz Air that is now operating flights to 12 destinations, increasing to 13 from spring 2016.
-On the other hand, Norwegian has reduced its volume of operations and does not longer base aircraft here which has reduced the size of the market for handling services, says Ms Kleive-Mathiesen.
