Oct 28, 2015 (newstodate): The three international airports around Moscow now account for 77 percent of all passengers through Russian airports.
This is a record-high level reflecting the change in the patterns as western airlines have largely reduced or even suspended air services between western airports and destinations in Russia.
Expectations are that the percentage will rise further when the 2015 full year statistics become available.
During the period January-August 2015, a total of 69.4 mio passengers were handled at all Russian airports, a decline by five percent, y-o-y, and 53.5 mio passengers passed through the three airports of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo that combined saw volumes up by two percent.
More significantly, the volume of Russian domestic passengers increased by 16 percent, while passenger volumes on international flights were down by nine percent.
The strain on the three Moscow airports is thus generated by Russian passengers forced to make a detour round Moscow for flights between domestic airports causing longer travel times and higher over-all costs.
