Jan 21, 2015 (newstodate): Russia is to develop Irkutsk Airport as a logistics center for the entire eastern part of the country.
The state will pass its ownership in the infrastructure to the region, allowing for the formation of private-public enterprises to spur the development of the region.
In the plans are the reconstruction of the airport infrastructure including a new runway, new passenger and cargo facilities and a unified air traffic management system.
New specifications for the projects will now be worked out to form the basis for tenders and negotiations with investors and partners.
With this decision, plans for new airport to replace the existing facility seem to have been abandoned.
Plans were to construct a new airport at Klyuchevaya, some 25 km from Irkutsk, replacing the current Irkutsk Airport that lies in the center of Irkutsk and is often plagued by bad visibility.
