Jan 05, 2015 (newstodate): Luring with state subsidies, Macedonia is keen to develop air services at the country's Skopje Airport.
The Macedonian state has now completed a tender calling for new low-cost routes to be opened with state subsidies to support the first three years of operation.
Wizz Air was alone in bidding in the contest and has now been approved to launch new services from Skopje to Oslo Sandefjord, Barcelona, Nuremberg, Lubeck and one destination in Germany yet to be announced.
The carrier will also launch its first flights from Ohrid to Basel on a year-round base.
The new services must be offered at least twice a week, and operations will start from June 2015.
Skopje was opened as Wizz Air's 17th base on October 28, 2012, and during the coming summer schedule the carrier will be operating flights to 19 destinations from Skopje, and Ohrid will now become the carrier's second destination in Maceconia.
From April 16, 2014, the carrier added a second Airbus A320 aircraft at Skopje Airport.
