Jan 26, 2015 (newstodate): The Belarus Minsk International Airport needs a second runway - but plans have repeatedly been delayed.
Talks between Belarus and China started in 2011, envisaging a project to be completed by 2014 including construction of a new passenger transit terminal, new information systems, new security equipment and construction of a new runway allowing for aircraft up to the size of the Airbus A380.
The Chinese design and price tag have, however, now been rejected and instead Belarus companies will take on the responsibility to construct the airport's second runway with capacity to allow operations by the largest aircraft, including an Airbus A380.
Construction works will start in 2016, and the new runway should be commissioned before the end of 2017.
The airport currently has a 3,641m runway.
