Jan 27, 2015 (newstodate): Despite the turbulence in the neighboring Russian market, Kazakhstan's Astana Airport saw a sound growth in passenger and cargo volumes in 2014.
A total of 2,960,181 passengers were handled at the airport, an increase by 13 percent, y-o-y.
International passengers accounted for 1,391,285, up 42 percent, y-o-y, while domestic passenger volumes were up by 38 percent to 1,568,896.
Cargo volumes were also up by 16 percent to 9,653 tonnes including both air cargo and mail shipments.
The country's leading carrier, Air Astana also saw progress in 2014, reporting a growth by three percent, y-o-y, to 3.8 mio passengers, but revenues from passenger flights were also down by three percent, reflecting the strong competition in the market from other international carriers.
Air Astana commenced regular flight operations on May 15, 2002, and currently operates a network of 60 international and domestic routes from hubs in Astana, Almaty and Atyrau with a fleet of 30 Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 757-200, Airbus A320 Family and Embraer 190 aircraft.
