Sep 30, 2014 (newstodate): While little has been heard since early summer from the project to launch new intercontinental flights from Norway to the USA and Asia, concrete preparations seem actually to be moving forward.
-Pending the delivery of the last remaining spare parts, we are currently completing the overhaul of the first two Boeing 747 aircraft to be registered with our Finnish subsidiary and shortly thereafter put on display in the Norwegian market before the end of October, says John Kunkel, owner of the US cargo carrier Viking International Airlines that will provide the aircraft for the Norwegian operation.
-From the start, we will be offering both passenger and cargo capacity from Oslo and Banak to the USA with aircraft that are already in our fleet, and become a new provider to the Norwegian seafood exporters with operations to start before the end this autumn.
-We have secured commitments from the seafood industry, and we will also be involved in seafood acquisition ourselves, adding to our foothold in the salmon logistics.
-To set up the salmon uplift from Banak Lakselv Airport we are to construct our own cargo terminal to be commissioned by spring 2015, and while flights will start with US operations, flights to destinations in Asia will follow shortly after, says Mr Kunkel in a phone interview with newstodate.
Mr Kunkel has reportedly also secured a majority post in Northcape Turnaroundport AS at Lakselv, a company at Lakselv targeting the turn-around of passengers and crews on cruise ships. This would generate further passenger flows for Viking International Airlines.
