Sep 23, 2014 (newstodate): Uzbekistan Airways is to bolster its freighter capacity at its cargo hub, Navoi Airport.
The carrier currently has two Boeing 767-300 passenger aircraft in Singapore for conversion to freighter versions, scheduled to enter production with the carrier by October 2014.
The two aircraft will replace the two Airbus A300-600F leased from Korean air Cargo that will be returned to Korea by the end of 2014.
Uzbekistan's Navoi Airport is strengthening its role as a hub for Europe-Asia flights, capitalizing on its geographical advantage of being within six hours flights from cargo hubs such as Frankfurt, Milan, Dubai, Delhi, Shanghai and Incheon.
Cargo traffic through Navoi include 11 weekly rotations by Korean Air Cargo on routes from Incheon, Milan, Tel Aviv and Basel, as well as 18 weekly rotations on routes operated by Uzbekistan Airways to Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt and Tianjin, as well cargo charter flights to Hamburg.
The airport's cargo terminal, commissioned on August 12, 2010, has an annual capacity of handling up to 100,000 tonnes and provides a vital element in the plan to set up an international logistics center at Navoi as contained in the MoU between Uzbekistan Airways and Korean Air, signed in February 2008.
