Sep 24, 2014 (newstodate): Work has now started on expansion of the terminal capacity of Latvia's Riga Airport.
At this stage of the project, reconstruction of the airport terminal includes the expansion of the non-Schengen area and the addition of four additional boarding sectors enabling the airport to handling of larger aircraft while increasing the over-all handling capacity of the airport.
And this is urgently needed: The existing facilities are designed for handling of up to 3.5 mio passengers per year - but today's volumes will already hit 4.7 mio passengers, while expectations are that the airport will be handling up to five mio passengers within three years from now.
In addition the airport is also to start a series of projects including apron renovation, runway and taxiway infrastructure, de-icing platforms and other elements.
