Sep 24, 2014 (newstodate): Finland's fledgling charter carrier Snowbird Airlines, founded on May 22, 2013, is also strongly affected by the Russia/Ukraine crisis.
A significant element in its business was large volumes of Russian passengers expected to board the aircraft to fly with Snowbird on the route from Oulu via Lappeenranta to Alicante, in Spain.
Expectations were that more than half of the passengers on the route would be Russians benefiting from express bus connections between St Petersburg and Lappeenranta in the Karelian region bordering Russia.
These expectations have, however, not materialized due to the conflict and the declining value of the Russian currency.
Starting from October 2, 2014, Snowbird will operate flights from Oulu via Helsinki to Malaga, and from November 25, 2014, flights from the Finnish destination Enontekio Airport in the Lapland region to Helsinki and London Gatwick will be added.
Snowbird Airlines will start out with one Airbus A320 aircraft, with plans to grow to three aircraft after an initial period.
