Sep 04, 2014 (newstodate): The cooperation between Greenland's Airports, Mittarfeqarfiit, and the Icelandic company Air Iceland Cargo is taking shape.
In May 2014, the two parties signed an agreement to cooperate closely on enhancing airfreight in Greenland, and the implementation of several issues comprised by the agreement is now near completion.
Under the agreement, the two parties will make it easier to import consumer goods, especially perishables, into four airports in Greenland.
As part of the agreement, Air Iceland will deliver one de-icing vehicle to Kulusuk Airport to raise regularity under adverse winter conditions that have so far been causing many delays and cancellations. This equipment is currently being positioned at the airport and will be ready for operations from the start of the coming icy season.
New GPUs have also been delivered to the airports concerned as requested by Air Iceland, a new cooling container for perishables has been established at Nuuk Airport, and deliveries by Air Iceland of technical handling equipment at the airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat has been completed, rounding off the enhancements to the infrastructure needed to facilitate Air Iceland's cargo and passenger operations.
It is now up to the market to make full use of the new capabilities for boosting shipments of cargo, primarily perishables, into Greenland.
In 2013, Air Iceland transported about 800 tonnes of cargo on its fleet of five Fokker F50 and two Bombardier Dash 8-200 aircraft that can be reconfigured to take cabin cargo containers.
Air Iceland is part of the the Icelandair Group and works in cooperation with Icelandair Cargo.
