Sep 18, 2014 (newstodate): While the issue of Greenland's future airport infrastructure has been on the agenda for years, so far without tangible results, yet another project has popped up.
The project concerns a major reconstruction of Ilulissat Airport on Greenland's mid-west coast, the Disko Bay, to facilitate traffic by larger aircraft up to the size of Airbus A320/Boeing 737.
The airport now has one 842 m runway capable of serving traffic by turboprop aircraft, but plans are to extend the runway to 2,800 m allowing for intercontinental flights from USA and Europe.
At its meeting in February 2014, Greenland's government decided to support the project and to meet with potential investors that reportedly may include Danish pension funds in a PPP construction.
A report by the Danish consultant COWI supports the project that may bring substantial economic and socio-economic benefits to the Greenland society.
