Sep 03, 2014 (newstodate): In a rare show of unity, US airlines and unions have succeeded in slowing down Norwegian's effort to grow its traffic to the USA.
The DOT has thus rejected the airline's request for an exemption that would have facilitated its expansion into the US market.
-The novel and complex nature of this case does not make an exemption appropriate or in the public interest, says DOT in its verdict based on pressure from Delta, American, United and other US airlines, the Association of Flight Attendants, the Transportation Trades Department AFL-CIO and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Norwegian Air has established Norwegian Air International based in Ireland, and its plans for opening up flights by this subsidiary to the USA have gained support from both the EU Commission and the government of Ireland, which has however not weighed sufficiently against the anti-Norwegian campaign in the USA.
The existing US flights by Norwegian Air from Europe, notably Scandinavia, are not affected by the latest DOT decision.
