Sep 22, 2014 (newstodate): Since 2010, Norway has been largely barred from exporting fresh salmon to China - formerly a burgeoning growth market.
Anyhow, the Norwegian salmon found various venues of continuing exports to China via alternative routes, including re-exporting via Vietnam as well as entering China via Hong Kong.
Now these cracks have been closed as well as China has enforced a full ban on Norwegian fresh salmon allegedly for fear of a virus.
Together with the closure of the Russian mark to Norwegian salmon, the new Chinese import ban will add further to the challenges for Norway's seafood exporters.
Before 2010, Norway provided some 90 percent of China's fresh salmon imports, but this proportion has since declined to less than 30 percent - now coming to a full stop.
