Sep 11, 2014 (newstodate): Two of three Baltic markets are seeing passenger volumes up in 2014, January-August included.
With a total of 3,255,995 passengers during the period, Latvia's Riga Airport is handling almost as much traffic as its two Baltic contenders, Estonia's Tallinn Airport and Lithuania's Vilnius Airport, counted together.
Tallinn Airport thus handled 1,347,089 passenger, and Vilnius Airport another 1,952,404 passengers.
But while passenger volumes at Riga Airport dropped 0.8 percent, y-o-y, during the period due to a shortfall of transit traffic by airBaltic after the political turbulence over Ukraine, Vilnius Airport was up 11.18 percent thanks also the volumes generated by the country's new carrier Air Lituanica, and Tallinn Airport saw volumes rising by 2.1 percent.
On the cargo side, Riga Airport is still the region's undisputed #1 with 25,522 tonnes while down 30.2 percent, y-o-y, reflecting the decrease in ISAF transports by US carriers.
Tallinn Airport was also down 2.3 percent to 12,426 tonnes as transit cargo via the airport coming in from Turkey and destined for Russia has dried up.
Only Vilnius Airport saw volumes up during the period, rising 9.44 percent, y-o-y, to 4,929 tonnes.
