Aug 07, 2014 (newstodate): The Hungarian LCC Wizz Air is adding further fuel to competition at Latvia's Riga Airport.
Starting from April 22, 2015, Wizz Air, plans to expand its presence at the airport by deploying a second Airbus A320 aircraft to increase services to and from Latvia.
As a first move, Wizz Air will launch flights on three new routes from Riga to Hamburg Lubeck, Stavanger and Liverpool. while flight frequencies will be increased on some of its existing routes in the summer 2015 season, with 11 weekly rotations on the route to London and three weekly flights to Doncaster Sheffield, also from 22 April 2015.
With the addition of the three routes now announced for 2015, Wizz Air will grow its offerings from Riga to a total of 11 routes to six countries.
As the second European LCC to operate to Riga after Ryanair that started its operations in Latvia on October 31, 2004, Wizz Air launched operations at Riga Airport on March 13, 2010, with three weekly rotations on the route from Oslo Torp Airport, Norway.
Starting from June 19, 2014, Wizz Air stationed one Airbus A320 aircraft at Riga Airport as the carrier's 17th operational base.
Elsewhere in the Baltic region, Wizz Air established Vilnius in Lithuania as its 14th operational base from April 17, 2011, allocating one A320 aircraft at Vilnius Airport, and adding a second aircraft from May 2012.
Estonia thus remains the only Baltic state without Wizz Air operations.
