Aug 01, 2014 (newstodate): The Hungarian LCC Wizz Air may be considering opening a new base in Bosnia-Herzegovina, sources say.
The destination in point is Tuzla where Wizz Air started flights from Malmo, in Sweden, from May 31, 2013, later adding flights to Tuzla also from Basel and Gothenburg.
In 2014, the carrier has also started operating on routes to Tuzla from Dortmund and Eindhoven.
The decision by Wizz Air to eventually launch Tuzla as a new base will, however, hinge on the negotiations with the Bosnian authorities that are seeking better terms with the carrier to raise its income from the traffic.
Once the largest military air force base in the former Yugoslavia, Tuzla International was placed under UN control in 1992, becoming from 1996 the main hub for the SFOR peacekeeping forces.
In 1998, Tuzla International Airport was turned into a commercial airport, opening October 10, 1998, as a joint civilian and military airport.
The first scheduled passenger services were opened in 2009, but the airport has found it difficult to attract much traffic.
