Aug 01, 2014 (newstodate): The partnership between Serbia's national carrier Air Serbia and Etihad Airways, celebrating its 1st anniversary today, has proved a success, at least seen from Serbia.
The five-year strategic partnership agreement was inked on August 1, 2013, and followed by Etihad's acquisition of 49 percent of the stake in Air Serbia.
Based on that, Air Serbia has leased seven Airbus A319 and two A320 aircraft and has placed orders for a further 10 A320neo aircraft slated for delivery from 2018.
The rejuvenated Serb carrier has also been able to launch services on nine new routes to Abu Dhabi, Banja Luka, Bucharest, Budapest, Beirut, Sofia, Varna and Warsaw as well as Tirana that will be added from September 23, 2014.
In the meantime, the EU Commission has announced that is it to look closer into Etihad's massive involvement with several European airlines, including also Air Serbia and Air Berlin to verify the extent of its control over these European airlines inside and outside the EU.
