Aug 19, 2014 (newstodate): Norway is a strong player in the Asian markets for the expensive king crabs. But competition is tough..
-One strong competitor is Russia that benefits from shorter distance to markets, says Bjorn Ronald Olsen, Cape Fish CEO.
-Russian exporters can actually deliver fresh crabs by boats directly to destinations in South Korea while we rely on sophisticated logistics solutions including trucks and airfreight at much higher costs.
-Also given the wide difference between Norway and Russia in wages, we are incapable on beating Russian competitors on price. Instead, our focus must be on quality as well as clever sales and marketing efforts. As a result, Norwegian fresh kings crabs are much in demand in the Asian markets, rightly considered a prime luxury delicacy of undisputed quality.
-And given the high market price for fresh king crabs in Asia, transport costs, even if air cargo rates are high, are still absorbed without difficulties.
-Kings crabs is a niche seafood product, compared to the huge volumes of fresh salmon exported from Norway. But while salmon may be sourced from many other producing countries, importers of king crabs have few alternatives to Norway.
-And while import of Norway's fresh salmon remains embargoed by China, the country's imports of king crabs from Norway are still without restraints, says Mr Olsen.
