Aug 05, 2014 (newstodate): Over the coming year, Latvia is to develop the infrastructure of Riga Airport to facilitate growth in volumes of passengers and operations.
Visions are that the airport will grow from last year's 4.8 mio passengers to up to 14 mio passengers by 2036 through existing and new airline customers, including more low-cost carriers.
This, however, presupposes that the airport will develop from being a regional airport to a Eurasian transport hub, which indicates expectations that airBaltic may be in the process of teaming up with an international partner airline.
The EU Cohesion Fund is supporting the project and on-going works will be completed by August 31, 2014, on the renovation of the runway pavement surface, runway strip reinforcement, construction of additional taxiway E and D, construction of category II lighting system at the northern end of the runway, reconstruction of aprons No. 2 and 3, construction of two de-icing areas, construction of rain-water drainage systems and airfield drainage, and construction of vehicle washing and garbage collection hangars.
In addition to this, renovation of the runway pavement, reconstruction of apron No. 2, and construction of a southern de-icing area will also be completed within this remaining construction season.
The full program of projects will be completed by July 31, 2015.
