Aug 29, 2014 (newstodate): In May 2014, Greenland's Airports, Mittarfeqarfiit and the Icelandic company Air Iceland Cargo signed an agreement to cooperate closely on enhancing airfreight in Greenland.
Given the current distortion of the markets for seafood after Russia's ban on imports from EU and other countries, notably including Norway, potentials for Greenland to grow its export volumes are on the rise.
-We have not yet, however, started to implement this cooperation with Greenland, says Inga Thor Gudmundsson, Air Iceland Director Sales and Marketing.
-We are still in a preparatory phase and no new concrete actions have been initiated yet. But it is obvious that market opportunities a huge, and we will be ready on our part to lift the seafood export cargo when Greenland's exporters require the capacity, says Mr Gudmundsson.
In 2013, the carrier transported about 800 tonnes of cargo on its fleet of five Fokker F50 and two Bombardier Dash 8-200 aircraft that can be reconfigured to take cabin cargo containers.
Air Iceland is part of the the Icelandair Group and works in cooperation with Icelandair Cargo.
