Aug 12, 2014 (newstodate): The coming tie-up between Alitalia and Etihad may bring fresh vigor to Italy as a major European air cargo market.
Etihad is to boost Milan Malpensa Airport as a major cargo hub as part of its investment of 650 mio euro in the ailing Italian carrier.
In June 2014, Etihad ranted last on Italy's CASS statistics on export cargo, aggregating 1,378 tonnes of cargo and growing 21.68 percent, y-o-y.
Alitalia ranted #4 with 2,427 tonnes but dropping 15.35 percent during the month.
Together, the two companies would, however, have beaten Lufthansa Cargo on the #2 position where the carrier listed 3,419 tonnes after decreasing 26.76 percent, y-o-y.
With Cargolux on top with 4,364 tonnes, up 1.51 percent, the total Italian IATA export cargo market was down 7.76 percent in June 2014, to 38.882 tonnes
Still Europe's second largest IATA export cargo market, larger than Great Britain and Holland, but far below #1, Germany with 104,797 tonnes.
