Aug 20, 2014 (newstodate): Plans for a new direct air links between the USA and Bulgaria are maturing faster than expected.
Earlier slated for late in 2015, the Bulgarian carrier BH Airlines, Balkan Holidays Airlines, now hopes to launch flights to New York and Chicago from Sofia already from spring 2015, pending a license from Bulgaria's CAA after the US authority has declared ready to accept the flights from Bulgaria and/or via any European point.
Preliminary plans calls for four weekly rotations with the airline's latest acquisition, an Airbus A330-200.
So far, the only flights between the Balkan region and the USA are provided by Turkish Airlines, so BH Airlines hopes to attract traffic also from Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Albania.
Looming on the horizon is another Balkan competitor planning for Transatlantic flights: Air Serbia.
After Serbia's recent upgrading to CAT 1 by the US FAA, the Serbian carrier Air Serbia also plans to launch services from Belgrade to New York from late in 2015 or early in 2016.
Air Serbia also considers flights to Chicago and Toronto at a later stage.
