Aug 7, 2014 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport is to see a sustained increase in air traffic by various airlines.
The Hungarian LCC Wizz Air has announced the opening of flights on three new routes from Vilnius from April 2015, adding new destinations Belfast, Hamburg and Malmo with two, three and two flights per week, respectively.
Wizz Air is already the top-provider of weekly flights during this summer, overtaking Ryanair.
Wizz Air is also to up frequencies on five existing routes from Vilnius from April 2015.
Effective from October 26, 2014, Turkish Airlines will offer two weekly rotations between Istanbul Vilnius after splitting the triangular flights Istanbul-Tallinn-Vilnius-Istanbul into two dedicated Baltic services.
In addition, the Latvian carrier airBaltic will launch new flights from Vilnius to Amsterdam starting October 30, 2014, to be offered four times per week.
The Lithuanian carrier Air Lituanica started operations only on June 30, 2013, but is now operating 43 flights per week from Vilnius to Brussels, Berlin, Prague, Munich, Paris, Tallinn, and Billund, as well as seasonal flights to Gothenburg and Malmo.
Starting from August 31, 2014, the carrier's route network will include also flights to Amsterdam.
During the first half of 2014, the airport handled a total of 1,349,230 passengers, an increase by 11.15 percent, y-o-y.
