Jul 29, 2014 (newstodate): Plans for start of new international air services by Viking International Airlines are moving forward, with new initiatives taken by the project.
Norwegian media thus report that the group behind Viking International Airlines, US-based Global First Response Inc has acquired a majority stake in a new company, Northcape Turnaroundport AS set up to provide handling of cruise ships in the country's northernmost region.
The plan is to offer facilities for turning around passengers and crews on cruise ships calling in the region, including flight connections between Norway and the USA.
Another key driver behind the airline under formation is also Norway's booming seafood exports with freighter and combi flights with Boeing 747 aircraft to and from Lakselv Banak Airport.
-We can confirm that we have held recent meetings with representatives from Viking International Airlines, and a meeting between the airline and Avinor has been scheduled for this autumn to handle Viking International Airlines' request for lease of land at the airport to build a new cargo terminal for handling of seafood exports, says Steinn Solheim, Lakselv Banak Airport manager.
The project group earlier expected the first flight with freighter aircraft to take place already by September 2014, but this has obviously been overly optimistic..
