Jul 31, 2014 (newstodate): The Swedish virtual airline, Fly Olympic offering the first direct flight connections from Sweden to Somalia proved a short-lived success.
The carrier scheduled its launch flight for June 6, 2014, from Stockholm to Entebbe, in Eritrea, continuing to Mogadishu, in Somalia, but it has now folded its wings.
After two weeks of trying to find a solution to its financial difficulties, Fly Olympic filed for bankruptcy on July 29, 2014.
-The new operation to Africa performed dramatically below all reasonable expectations, and the losses sustained were too great for a company of our size to survive. We had discussed with several investment groups over the last 10 days in a bid to save the company, but unfortunately time ran out, a press release from the company reads.
Using a Boeing 767-200ER from Jordan Aviation, Fly Olympic was also to start a similar route from London Gatwick, and in both cases the aircraft would fly via Amman, in Jordan.
