Jun 13, 2014 (newstodate): A third freighter frequency between Istanbul and the Nordic region has long been on the wishing-list of Turkish Airlines Cargo in the region.
The company is currently operating two weekly rotations on the route from Istanbul to Helsinki, returning, since October 30, 2011, via Stockholm Arlanda.
And a third mid-week flight will indeed now be added starting from next week - but operating directly Istanbul-Helsinki-Istanbul and not including a call at Stockholm as reported by some media.
-We had talks about a third freighter flight between Turkey and Finland either via Stockholm as now, or via for example Oslo or Malmo but the decision has been otherwise, says Cuneyt Oksuz, Turkish Airlines Regional Cargo Manager, Sweden, Norway, Finland.
-We are seeing a good performance in the Nordic region without significant ups and down, but developing gradually and in a balanced way. We do see room for growth but one obstacle to be removed first is the current inadequacies in the infrastructure at the airports of Istanbul.
-A new cargo terminal four times bigger than the existing one is under construction at Istanbul Atatrk Airport and will be commissioned in five or six months. This will enable us to raise the level of quality and thus allow us to grow the through-put very significantly matching the steep rise in number of flights and destinations by Turkish Airlines.
-So only after this new infrastructure is in place can we grow our services in the Nordic region, but plans are indeed to expand our volumes here as well, says Mr Oksuz.
Serving Turkish Airlines Cargo in the Nordic region is NordicGSA that also arranges trucking services connecting to the carrier's freighter services as well as to and from the adjacent Baltic region.
