Jun 25, 2014 (newstodate): Emirates SkyCargo's decision to move away its two weekly freighter operations from Sweden's Gothenburg Landvetter Airport from July 1, 2014, will deal a further blow to the airport's dwindling role in Scandinavia's air cargo industry.
Emirates' departure from the airport follows on Asiana Cargo's twice-weekly Boeing 747-400F freighter move to Oslo Gardermoen Airport from September 7, 2012, that also cost the airport dearly in lost cargo volume.
In 2011, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport handled a total of 41,806 tonnes of flown air cargo against 47,705 tonnes in 2010 - a drop by 12.4 percent, y-o-y.
In 2012, the airport's flown cargo volumes were again down by 20.6 percent, y-o-y, to 34,665 tonnes - and in 2013 volumes dropped further by 8.7 percent, y-o-y, to 31,649 tonnes.
With the demise of the wide-body capacity freighters, the airport is now only serving smaller freighters mainly on integrator traffic.
