Jun 27, 2014 (newstodate): The reopening of Stepanakert Airport in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region remains a hot political issue - and the airport is still without traffic.
Technically, the airport has fully open for traffic since spring 2011, with a new terminal and three Canadair CRJ200 aircraft in the colors of the new carrier Artsakh Air have been standing idle on the tarmac.
The airport has only seen a few recent flights by small company jets serving tourist visits, but this has immediately aroused strong objections from Azerbaijan that has threatened to shoot down any aircraft into or out of the airport while ICAO has repeatedly confirmed its disapproval of attempts to open regular flights to the airport.
The airport has thus been void of operations now for more than 20 years.
