Jun 20, 2014 (newstodate): The Finnish carrier and member of the SAS Group, Blue1 will have its wings cut as a result from SAS' sustained loss-making business.
SAS acquired Blue1 in 1998. In 2005 Blue1 became the second largest Finnish airline with more than 100 daily flights and biggest operator between Finland and Scandinavia, but since 2011 the carrier has served exclusively as a capacity provider for SAS in the Finnish market operating a fleet comprising nine Boeing 717 aircraft.
Blue1, based at Helsinki, took delivery of its first Boeing 717 aircraft in August 2010, but a decision has now been announced to cut back the fleet to five aircraft.
The contract between SAS and Blue1 expires later in 2014, and Blue1 will then monitor the market for potential new charter or ACMI customers to balance its current dependence on SAS.
