Jun 23, 2014 (newstodate): As part of its Strategy 2018, the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways is to adjust its aircraft fleet by the start of 2015.
Currently in the fleet are three Airbus A319 aircraft, but one will go from early 2015 as the carrier retreats from the international charter market.
Only one year after the introduction of its first Airbus A319 in March 2012, the Faroe Islands' carrier Atlantic Airways added a second Airbus in spring 2013 to operate charter flights for the tour operator Atlantis Rejser to leisure destinations, primarily out of Denmark's Billund Airport.
A third Airbus A319 was acquired following a second contract with the tour operator to provide charter capacity, primarily out of Copenhagen, from October 2013.
With the drastic changes in the charter market after the decline in the Egyptian tourism, the two aircraft however have become a burden on the airline.
The company-owned first A319 was delivered fresh from the factory, while the two other aircraft earlier serving with other carriers were acquired on lease contracts.
It is still undecided if the Airbus to go will be the company-owned or one of the leased aircraft, probably depending on the terms of the leasing contracts.
In 2015 the carrier will take in a new aircraft type to provide capacity for new flights connecting the Faroe Islands with destinations in neighboring markets under the NORD-strategy, including flights to Bergen, Aberdeen and Reykjavik/Keflavik.
Atlantic Airways is evaluating Embraer 145, CRJ200 and Q400 as its future aircraft to build this regional network, with one aircraft to be introduced by spring 2015.
A decision on outright purchase or possible forms of leasing has yet to be taken, but the choice of aircraft will be made in October 2015.
