Jun 30, 2014 (newstodate): At long last: Serbia has been granted Category I status by FAA in the latest revision of the Aviation Safety Program.
The decision was communicated on June 27, 2014, and with this upgrading Serbia is now free to set up flights on new routes into North America on aircraft under its own registration.
The Category 1 status now announced is based on a March 2014 FAA assessment of the safety oversight provided by the Civil Aviation Directorate of the Republic of Serbia, and an FAA verification of necessary corrective actions during a follow on visit to the Republic of Serbia this month.
Serbia was downgraded from Category 1 in 2002, barring any service by a Serbia-registered aircraft carrier into North American airports, and the country has since made several unsuccessful attempts to regain its position that will allow JAT to launch flights on routes to the USA.
Serbia's now-defunct carrier JAT last performed a direct flight between Serbia and the USA in 1992.
With the ban on Serbia now lifted, no European carriers audited by FAA remain in Category II.
