May 13, 2014 (newstodate): The political rift between Russia and Ukraine has a deep impact on the commercial aviation in the region.
On one hand, Ukraine has banned all flights via Ukrainian airspace to and from the Crimean airport at Simferopol, forcing the Russian carriers operating between the Crimea and Russia to operate with alternative routes at penalties on flying time.
Now, Russia's federate aviation agency Rosaviatsia is threatening to ban all flights by Ukrainian charter and scheduled carriers through Russian airspace or via Russian airports unless Kiev loosens its ban on the Crimean flight operations.
Simferopol Airport was officially closed by the Ukrainian authorities in March 2014, but Russian carriers have since built up an increasing volume of services to Moscow from the region.
